Our
Mission
The Center for Social Concern emphasizes the value of service with
others, rather than the commonly accepted concept of service to
others. The volunteer and client enter into an educational process where
both benefit from the interaction and reciprocal learning is the common
ground for all of our initiatives. Our programs and efforts are striving
to create a "better community" in and around the Johns Hopkins
campus.

Our
Facility
The Center for Social Concern is located on the second floor of Levering
Hall. Our location is unique in that the main area of our office
space contains an incredible floor-to-ceiling mural done
by Robert R. Hieronimus, Ph.D. "The Apocalypse" was commissioned
in 1968 by Dr. Chester Wickwire, then-Chaplain of the Johns Hopkins University.
A full-color, printed mural guide is available upon request. Let us know
if you would like a copy and we will send you one. Or just stop by to
check it out!

Our
Student Groups
CSC
organizes our all of student groups into four Learning Communities,
which represent the four areas of focus for the Center for Social
Concern. These five areas are: Arts, Health, Tutoring/Mentoring,
Social Justice, and the "Three A's" (Advocacy, Awareness, Activism). CSC's Student Advisory Board oversees
ther Learning Communities. To learn more about each Learning Community,

Biographies
Bill
Tiefenwerth, CSC Director - btief@jhu.edu
Bill has been at Johns Hopkins University in the
Homewood Student Affairs division since 1979. In 1981, he was the
co-founder of the Jail Tutorial Project, which continues its work
in the Baltimore City Detention Unit to this day.
In
the late 1980s, he worked with the University Chaplaincy to develop
The Group for Civic Progress, a pilot project run by concerned JHU
students in community services. In 1992, Bill Tiefenwerth was charged
by the University to create the Johns Hopkins Office of Volunteer
Services. As the director of this new resource, he began with the
four existing community service programs (some of which were developed
through the Group for Civic Progress), and gradually expanded upon
that number. In 1994, Bill formed a partnership with the Greater
Homewood Community Corporation and the Northern District Baltimore
City Police to found the Safe & Smart Center in the heart of
the Waverly Community. He designed both the programming component
and the interior layout. In 1993, Bill's Safe & Smart Center
was awarded the "Best Use of an Existing Urban Structure"
by the Neighborhood Design Center.
Bill
is the 1999 recipient of the "Gold Cup," in recognition
for outstanding contributions to student life and student activities.
In 2000, he was named an “Unsung Hero” by the Baltimore
City Paper. Bill is always looking for new service opportunities
in the community, and ways to strengthen old ones. |
