The Hampden Tutorial Project has at its foundation The
Johns Hopkins University’s commitment to education and personal
enrichment. One of the best ways for Johns Hopkins students to exemplify
these ideals is by improving the lives of Baltimore children through both
academic and personal encouragement. The neighborhood we chose to target
is Hampden, just west of the Homewood campus. In the heart of this small
community, the Hampden Family Center (HFC) strives “to enrich the
lives of Hampden residents through education and professional support
and to encourage individual growth and community fellowship.” The
goal of the Hampden Tutorial Project is to support this mission by providing
academic and mentoring assistance to one of the HFC’s key programs,
the One-on-One Tutoring Program. Volunteer tutors are matched for a semester
or academic year with children or young adults who seek academic assistance
in subjects such as reading, math, and science. By providing this type
of positive and consistent mentoring presence, the project will foster
an interest in learning and encourage Hampden children to pursue higher
education.
