Received his Bachelor's degree in psychology from Johns Hopkins University, in 1968 and then went on to Law school at the University of Maryland, graduating in 1972. While attending Hopkins he was very active in the civil rights movement, participating in the NAACP’s “Freedom Summer” of 1964, during which students from all over the country came together in Mississippi and worked to register African American’s to vote. He was also active in protesting the Vietnam war and was arrested while protesting in front of the Greenmount recruitment center, leading to a supreme court case.
