An after-school tutoring program for elementary school children

The Johns Hopkins Tutorial Project is an after-school tutoring program that provides academic support for elementary school students. Through this program, children are paired with Johns Hopkins University students to receive one-on-one help in reading and math.

For nine to ten weeks each semester, approximately 100 children come to the Homewood campus twice a week, transported by either the program's bus or by their families. Trained tutors plan an hour of activities and educational games that are specifically selected to meet each child's needs, based on assessments conducted at the beginning of the semester.

In addition to the program's games and other educational materials, an on-site computer lab and a children's library support tutors in individualizing instruction for each child. Tutors are trained and supported throughout the semester by a full-time professional educator, with additional student staff overseeing the progress of each tutor-tutee pair.

Originally founded under the auspices of the chaplain's office, the program now functions as part of the university's Center for Social Concern and is one of the many programs overseen by this office. Funding is provided by Johns Hopkins University and individual donors and contributors.
